Wilson & Moore
Side by Side
Threadhead Records
Hurricane Katrina silver linings are often small consolation for the devastation that this region has experienced. Perhaps a heightened appreciation for life’s simple pleasures is one such outcome, and Side by Side, a collaborative effort from two New Orleans music veterans certainly delivers in that regard. The serendipitous events that brought singer/songwriter Jesse Moore and guitar-whiz/singer/songwriter Chip Wilson together as neighbors in the redevelopment community known as the Musician’s Village have spawned a unique musical effort that likely would not have resulted otherwise. Synergy is evident, as Wilson confides that “Singing with Jesse Moore has been a revelation, bringing out music that I wasn’t sure I had in me.” Anders Osborne serves as producer, and pop, blues, and boogie-woogie sensitivities are at play throughout, with a subtle roots quality more prevalent in previous recordings of these artists. Highlights include the lively and catchy opening track “All of Y’All,” the poignant strolling balled “Ahnalee” and the slide guitar peppered “Bayou du Chat Noir.” The textured vocal harmonies are exquisite, simplistic yet appropriate instrumentation enhances Wilson’s six-string mastery, and the exceptional songwriting sensitivities of Wilson and Moore bring Side by Side front and center on the summer music release list. —Craig Cortello
