Overview
We have acquired the theatrical rights to Dan Baum’s book, NINE LIVES, an oral history of New Orleans from Hurricane Betsy in 1965 through Katrina. Seen through the eyes of a broad cross-section of the city’s residents, the portrait that emerges is eccentric, fierce, funny, heartbreaking, terrifying and, ultimately, deeply human.
We’re seeking funds to produce a cast album as a stepping stone to a Broadway musical. The album will be a celebration and preservation of New Orleans’ uniquely vibrant (and perennially endangered) musical and cultural heritages.
Mirroring the city’s multiracial, multilingual, multicultural diversity, the score encompasses delta blues, gospel, trad jazz, modern jazz, 60’s soul, Haitian meringue, funk, brass band, Mardi Gras Indian chants and hip-hop – the musical bedrock that the city rests on.
We’ll record the album in New Orleans with the city’s finest musicians.
